About the Event
VFX Masters Series is a free event at the Capitol. Come early for networking reception and door prizes, and stay for Hollywood-level visual effects presentations and company demos. Rob Bredow, CTO and Visual Effects Supervisor for Sony Pictures Imageworks, will present his talk, “Cooking Up Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs with a Helping of Open Source,” accompanied by visuals and instructional film clips. His other visual effects credits include films Surf’s Up, The Polar Express, Stuart Little and Cast Away, plus several Academy Award nominations. Dan Abrams, Creative Director for Tronic and former CG Supervisor for Digital Domain, is presenting “Digital Cinematography - Benjamin Button and Beyond.” Dan will discuss the new model of CG rendering he designed for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which evolved from his background in blockbuster effects films, animated movies, and TV commercials, and what it means for the future of VFX production. Plus “Behind The Scenes with Troublemaker Studios,” a rare Q&A session with Robert Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios VFX team discussing their process from concept art to final VFX shots. These VFX presentations and opening reception have been designed to provide Hollywood-level visual effects knowledge and networking to companies in the Austin interactive, film and media community. Event sponsors are NVIDIA, Critical Mass Interactive, Newtek, DATA-S Productions, Radioactive Labs, RenderStream, Sam Houston State University, Socci Communications, Spiderwood Studios and Studio Nouveau. Event includes short presentations and company demos from NVIDIA, Newtek, Critical Mass Interactive, Powerhouse Animation and RenderStream. Event partners include Texas Motion Picture Alliance, AIGA Austin, GamesBizWire and Greater Austin Events. VFX Masters Series is being held in the Texas State Capitol's underground Extension, north (behind) of the Capitol. Opening reception is located in Legislative Conference Center E2.002, while presentations are being held in main auditorium upstairs. Capitol Visitor's Parking garage is on the north side of 12th street, between San Jacinto and Trinity. More info and RSVP available at www.siggraphaustin.org.
